Cleaning out my closet
PovertyAustralia - Sydney
Inspiration
What inspired me to give 85% of my closet away?
You may say a well deserved audit.
Many many untouched unworn clothes that have been sitting in my closet for the past 20 years, many of which i had never taken a look at in the last 10 but which had somehow gone under the radar of my life, been shoved in unmarked boxes in my garage or had gotten lost in the many times i had moved houses. It was time to let go...

It was time to let go...
What
With the help of a few reliable friends who were emotionally detached from all my clothes, belts and bags, i slowly began to fill the garbage bags; 9 to be exact; with items that could potentially help another person, be re-used or recycled to create a useful solution in the life of another human being.
How
I simply loaded them (squeezed them rather) into the back seat of my car and off we went to Vinnies (St Vincent de Paul).
Others were given to a clothes swap that raises funds for financially disadvantaged young people who need assistance getting to summercamp this January.
People were invited to donate their clothes to the op-shop where clothes were sold for a reduced price in order to sponsor high school age students. All moneys made went directly to accommodation, transport and meals for the week.
Are you a hoarder like i was? Maybe it's time for that belated spring clean?
In all cases, giving is liberating.

Thats sweet! I should do that, I have so many clothes that I've grown out of. Do you know any well known places where you can give them?
Hi Tom,
There are SO many places to get you started. If you're short of ideas, GOOGLE is never short of direction. Do you live in Sydney Metropolitan Area? Here are some suggestions to kick you off:
Mission Australia: www.missionaustralia.com.au
St Vincent de Paul: www.vinnies.org.au
Salvation Army: www.salvationarmy.org.au
Smith Family Charity: www.TheSmithFamily.com.au
Learning Links: www.learninglinks.org.au
Community Helping Hand Association Inc: www.chha.org.au
Thank you for your heart towards justice. Great to know our one small idea or action can have such a ripple effect on others and our community. Happy cleaning :)
Thanks...only I only wish I lived in Australia. I live in Idaho, USA. I've cleaned out my closet and now it's sitting in a bag in my front room. I'll have to use that google search. Thanks
K i found one. Salvation army about an hour from my house. This is sweet!
hmmm.. i have some clothes i dont need. im gonna do this!
It's something that everyone can do and should do more often!
Cloths that doesn't fit (when they will, they are out of fashion and you can buy other cloths that you want =) ), cloths that you don't like and cloths that you are tired of....
You will feel so much better when you don't have things that just take up space! Great reminder!
I did this last summer and it felt so good!
I did this a few months ago and i had so much clothes and stuff i didnt wear or use anymore! A lot of it was very nice stuff that i didnt wear...why not give it to people that need it!
This is such a great idea! My parents are always on me to clean out my closet & dresser. Now I see this as an opportunity to bless others- not a chore!
